Description

Applicant Elsie Reich began working for the Thiele Sausage Company on June 4, 1956, and worked regularly up until November
of 1964. At her workmen's compensation hearing in June, 1965, Mrs. Reich testified that in the afternoon of Friday, November
13, 1964, her foreman sent her to wash dishes in the kitchen. On the way she slipped. She testified that "I twisted around
and I tried to get hold of something, and I grabbed the wall so I did not fall down." The slip occurred between 2 and 3 in
the afternoon -- her regular quitting time was 3:45. She testified that pain started about forty-five minutes or an hour before
quitting time and gradually worsened. She went home at 4:34 p. m. She claimed that, due to the pain, she had a hard time climbing
into the car after work and that when she reached home she went to bed with a heating pad and spent most of the weekend lying
down. She testified that she continued to have pain in her back on the following Monday, the 16th, and on the 17th, 18th,
and 19th of November, but she went to work on those days. In describing the pain she stated, "I had a very big pain in my
back and I hardly could lift my arms up." Mrs. Reich also testified that on November 19, 1964, she was carrying a stack of empty meat-loaf pans weighing between 20
and 30 pounds. She had to carry these pans, accordion style, through a narrow space between a machine and a truck. To move
through the opening she had to turn sideways, holding the pans outward from the side of her body with the right arm extended
at shoulder height and the left arm crossing her body. She testified that she could not stand the pain and had to drop the
pans. Mrs. Reich further testified that after this incident she worked for about an hour and a half but the pain was so bad
that she had to cry. She finally left work at about 12 noon. She testified that she tried to take a bus home but because of
the pain could not board it and had to call a cab. When she arrived home she claims she could not undress herself so she went
to bed with her clothes on. When her husband came home he called Dr. Klein, who arranged for Mrs. Reich's admission to St.
Michael's Hospital which she entered on November 21, 1964. The delay was due to the fact that a bed was not available until
that date. After admission Dr. Klein called in Dr. Bruno who saw the applicant for the first time on November 22d. He received
no history of trauma at that time. He diagnosed her condition as a protruded disc at L-5, S-1, and he thought it was central
in location. On December 7, 1964, Mrs. Reich was released from the hospital and remained at home until January 2, 1965, when
she reentered the hospital under the care of Dr. Bruno.
